The Original Aviators

It’s “Fleet Week” here in San Francisco. Over the years I’ve taken hundreds of photos during this event. I’ve photographed ships and airshows from the coast, from the Golden Gate Bridge, from an inland hill, and — most memorably — from aboard the Potomac, the restored vessel originally used by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Most amusing to me, though, were a few images in which Nature’s original aviators got into the action. Here, on the left, two raptors seem determined to show their own derring-do in the sky, with the Blue Angels precision flyers in the background. And on the right, the swooping seagull and pelican are all but ignored by spectators intent on searching for aero-acrobats … or on hooking a Catch of the Day.
